Coastal Living Showhouse 2013
Summer has left, but I thought we could see a coastal home that shouts fun living as a last hurrah to summer. Just a 20 minute (16 mile) drive to historic Charleston, SC is Daniel Island, SC and a community referred to as Island Town. This 3 story plantation style home was built by Max Crosby Construction, with interior design by Ginger Brewton. The home was built on a prime piece of land right on the Wando River.
From conception to completion, this home makes a statement. The location is as noted below, and in close proximity to Charleston, and the other resort islands.
It was designed so that just about everything you need you can walk to, including schools. The photo sure makes it look inviting!
This is the front elevation and the firt thing you notice is the abundance of windows which translates to lots of interior light. There are three floors of living space, all topped by the practicality of a metal roof. Low country cottage style is evident.
I really prefer a floor plan like this where all your living space is open and can accommodate a crowd. With the location of the home on the water, I would probably never use the dining room very much. The one comment I have regarding the kitchen is I would have utilized the space more effectively and designed the layout differently.
The bedrooms are all nicely sized, with the master dominating one side, which allows for privacy. My kind of master closet space!
We enter the home from the front porch. A cheery welcome awaits.
The first thing you will notice is that the designer was not afraid to use color, and lots of it. With all white walls, woodwork , and kitchen, the fabrics pop.
Turquoise and orange or coral has been quite popular, and here it is lovely, with an added dash of yellow. The natural sisal rug adds a be achy element, and is low maintenance.
Simple roman shade adds to the casual, yet sophisticated look.
The back porch, which looks out directly onto the water views.
The kitchen is quite compact for such large scale rooms, and is the one element I would tweak, but the design and look is still lovely.
The back hall has plenty of storage and links directly to the rear terrace.
The breakfast area has such lovely views. I like the shell inspire table base, and the orange chairs.
The bar area is part of the dining room at the front of the house. I could see having a quiet coffee or drink here.
The designer used a sustain print on the sofa, quatrefoil and zigzag patterns to create a Moroccan vibe. Here we see color introduced on the walls.
Here in the study, Brewer used a graphic bold colored wallpaper, something I am seeing more and more of, and mixed it with more pattern and color. The use of sisal keeps it all balanced.
I like how the designer used tow different greens to add interest to this chair.
In the master bedroom, we are back to white and a more serene result. The pops of color keep it modern and interesting.
The master bath with a blue vanity topped by marble compliments the free standing tub, which I much prefer.
Wallpaper again in this feminine inspired bedroom. Sisal again is used to maintain the coastal feeling throughout the house.
The second bath upstairs
Surfboard and colors suitable for a boys room.
View of the back of the home. Lots of covered outdoor space.
This is the upstairs balcony facing the water.
Nice view, yes?
And there is even an outdoor shower.
What a lovely view to end the day with…….
The Low Country of South Carolina is a beautiful place to live and to visit. Filled with historic areas, amazing cuisine and beautiful places to live. With summer fading into history, I just had to take one more opportunity to say hello to a coastal living. This home is open for tours through October.
